Getting Started with Chickens

  • Florence-Lauderdale Public Library 350 North Wood Avenue Florence, AL, 35630 United States (map)

The daydream of having your own laying hens in your backyard may be tempting, but there are many factors to consider before making such a demanding investment in time and expense.

September is a good month to do a little research, and the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library is here to help. "Getting Started with Chickens" is a presentation that is free and open to the public. It will be Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the library, 350 N. Wood Ave. in Florence. The program will be from 4 to 6 p.m.

Presented in partnership with the Alabama Extension System, the program will offer tips on space requirements, nutrition, equipment, biosecurity, and more.

Residents should remember that backyard chickens are not allowed within the city limits of Florence. If you live within an incorporated township in the county, or a neighborhood with a covenant, you should inquire to ensure that keeping chickens is allowed at your home. Always check with the ordinance of the city in which you live before considering the establishment of backyard chickens.
